SETsquared Background

SETsquared is a joint initiative between Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey universities to tackle a genuine need among early-stage technology companies across Southern England, whether they have developed from university research or not.

A unique marketplace

SETsquared's region is roughly bounded by the M5, M4, M3 and the A31 - A35. As one of the richest areas in the UK in terms of GDP, the region is home to many leading research-based technology corporates, universities, public-sector research establishments and successful entrepreneurs. It is also within easy reach of London - the UK's venture capital centre. Despite this, the region has a lower-than-expected technology start-up rate compared to other similar areas, such as Cambridge or Silicon Valley.

Addressing the needs of entrepreneurs

Through SETsquared, the five universities give practical support to technology start-ups by offering an infrastructure around which an entrepreneurial community and culture can develop. Led by experienced entrepreneurs working alongside the five universities, SETsquared can provide your new company with professional facilities and access to a hugely experienced entrepreneurial community.

Similar initiatives

SETsquared is similar to initiatives in the US with impressive track records. For example, Stanford and MIT, which offer central infrastructures for emerging businesses, along with professional support services and business education opportunities.
