Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute a ‘catalyst for research and economic growth’

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts has hailed the new Southampton Martine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) as exemplary of the relationships required between industry and higher education to drive future economic growth in the UK and around the world. 

Mr Willetts formally opened the Institute during ceremonies in Southampton accompanied by Professor Don Nutbeam, University of Southampton Vice-Chancellor, and Richard Sadler, Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd’s Register (LR).

SETsquared companies SEaB Energy Limited and NakedEnergy Ltd were two of the 16 most dynamic, innovative and fastest growing cleantech companies in Britain who earned a place on the UK Trade and Investment backed Clean and Cool Mission 2012 entrepreneurial trade mission to Cleantech in San Francisco and to Silicon Valley 24th to 31st March 2012.

Exeter to become catalyst for engaging research

The University of Exeter has been awarded £300,000 to become a centre of excellence for public engagement in research. The grant from Research Councils UK (RCUK) will ensure Exeter’s research addresses the most pressing issues facing people today: from patients to business leaders.

By becoming one of eight University Catalysts for Public Engagement, Exeter will build on a series of excellent initiatives already underway and ensurepublic engagement becomes an embedded part of its research culture.
