Digital Bristol Week showcases the future of media technology

Technology experts from the University of Bristol will be sharing their knowledge and advice as part of Digital Bristol Week – the largest free programme of training, events, workshops and panels ever held in Bristol for media professionals.

A packed schedule of events, organised by the BBC, runs from 26 January until 1 February and offers tree training, workshops and panel discussions for media professionals in the city.

The BBC Academy, the BBC’s centre for training and development, and BBC Bristol will be working with high-profile partners to deliver a packed schedule of networking, training and knowledge exchange for the creative industries. 

Bristol University is represented by Nick Sturge, Director of the University’s SETsquared business acceleration centre, who will be joined by Professor Dave Bull, whose work in video analysis, compression and communications has had a significant commercial impact.

They will be involved in the Technology Day on Tuesday, 29 January, beginning with the Beyond 3D panel discussion at 9.30am.

Then, from 10am to 4pm, the SETsquared team will be displaying a number of exciting technologies at the Early Stage Technology Showcase. Experts will be on hand to explain the technologies, their stage of development and commercialisation and the experiences of the researchers, technologists and entrepreneurs.

Nick Sturge will then give advice on turning new ideas into profitable businesses at a workshop entitled The Right Environment for Exploiting New Technologies from 1pm.

He said: “There is so much going on in digital, creative and technology innovation at the moment – it’s been a challenge to ensure the showcase is representative of this.

“We will be showcasing technologies related to broadcast, content and user experience from the research level up to early stage commercial operation. Panel sessions will also allow us to discuss how to best exploit these new technologies and the exciting cutting-edge research that is happening at Bristol University.”

Each day of Digital Bristol Week has a different theme and focus – essential skills, new technology, beyond broadcast, digital production and future business – with demand for places on each day anticipated to be very high. Some events have sold out already.

Andy Corp, Innovation Executive at BBC Bristol, said: “It is incredibly exciting for us to be hosting what will no doubt be a fantastic week.  Aside from access to free high quality training, hands on experience of new technologies and hearing from high-profile speakers – it’ll be a great place to meet interesting people and build on the partnerships which make Bristol a creative hub.”

Digital Bristol Week is being produced by the BBC in partnership with the University of Bristol, UWE Bristol, Creative Skillset, Bristol Media, Bristol City Council, Creative England and the Pervasive Media Studio.
