Fourth State Medicine make final of global competition

SETsquared Surrey member, Fourth State Medicine (4SM), has made the final of a global competition – The 2016 Institute of Engineering & Technology Innovation Awards.

The awards celebrate the very best innovations from both industry and academia, sharing landmark work and developments taking place across science, engineering and technology and 4SM is nominated in the ‘Horizontal Innovation’ category.

Leveraging state of the art space technology, Fourth State Medicine has created a wrinkle-busting hand-held plasma pen for use in cosmetic surgery. This same product could also be used to treat ulcers, burns, bedsores and other wounds.

Established in 2012, the company has raised over £500k of investment so far and the device was successfully tested back in October 2015.

The plasma pen is already endorsed by several Harley Street surgeons and academics, thanks to the fact that the technology combines multiple treatment options in a simple and elegant system that has the potential to revolutionise the multi-billion skin resurfacing and wrinkle removal market.

It also has the potential for sterilisation and eradication of MRSA for wound care, and for the sterilisation and alleviation of symptoms in diabetic ulcers, which will be highly beneficial and positive for the healthcare industry.

Tom Frame, CEO of Fourth State Medicine commented: “The Innovation Awards attract over 400 entries each year, so to be shortlisted is a great honour. We are nominated alongside the likes of as BAE Systems, London Underground, QinetiQ, Medtronic, Williams and BT, and to be alongside these greats of British innovation is a major milestone in the life of Fourth State Medicine, and a further endorsement of how far we have come.

The final takes place on 16th November in London – good luck to the Fourth State Medicine team.
