Shanghai Innovation Medical Tech Co. Ltd

Biodegradable implant set to revolutionise surgical procedures

“Through the LIF+ programme I have gained a lot of valuable business and management skills, which is especially important for us engineers. “

Overview

Guangyin Yuan is a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2018 he created the Shanghai Innovation Medical Tech Company, which is a medical device company that makes novel biodegradable Mg-based bone implants. Most bone implants are made of stainless steel or titanium alloy, this conventional medical material is not biodegradable, and when the patient’s bone recovers the implant must be removed with a second operation. However, using Shanghai Innovation’s technology, this is avoided because the implant will biodegrade completely when the fractured bone recovers, significantly reducing recovery time and cutting the cost to the patient.

“We have now performed 30 successful clinical trials and recruitment of a larger scale clinical trial with 80-100 volunteers is underway. We will focus on the domestic market first, but after that we hope to apply for our CE mark for entry into European markets, including Germany and the UK, I estimate this stage will take three to four years.”
