Biodegradable implant set to revolutionise surgical procedures

“Through the LIF+ programme I have gained a lot of valuable business and management skills, which is especially important for us engineers. “

Overview

Guangyin Yuan is a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2018 he created the Shanghai Innovation Medical Tech Company, a medical device company that makes novel biodegradable magnesium-based bone implants. Most bone implants are made of stainless steel or titanium alloy, which is not biodegradable. When the patient’s bone recovers the implant must be removed with a second operation. However, Shanghai Innovation’s technology avoids this step because the implant biodegrades completely when the fractured bone recovers. This significantly reduces recovery time and cuts the cost to the patient.

“We have now performed 30 successful clinical trials and recruitment of a larger scale clinical trial with 80 to 100 volunteers is underway. We will focus on the domestic market first, but after that we hope to apply for our CE mark for entry into European markets, including Germany and the UK. I estimate this stage will take three to four years.”
