Micrima awarded innovate UK grant to fund Biopsy development

Reaching a final diagnosis for breast cancer is a complex process with many steps. Despite the diagnostic performance of established imaging modalities, an image guided needle biopsy is almost always carried out. This means that the presence of cancer can be confirmed by means of a laboratory analysis of a tissue sample. Biopsies are achieved by means of modified x-ray mammography and MRI systems, or rely on the expert skill of an ultra-sonographer operating a freehand probe as well as the biopsy needle.

Micrima has proposed an adaptation of MARIA™ to enable biopsies to be performed using the same device that is used to capture diagnostic radio-wave images of the whole breast. The company is pleased to announce that Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, has recognised this opportunity to improve breast care and awarded Micrima a £626,996 grant to develop a prototype of this new system over the next 24 months.
