WORLD LEADING BUSINESS SUPPORT

DEFENCE AND SECURITY

Funding & business support opportunities for SMEs
and academics in the defence and security sector.

South/Southwest England and South Wales are hubs for the UK’s defence and security industry activity, with 59 of the 111 defence-sector-focused SMEs located in these two regions. Driven by established ecosystems of government agencies like DSTL in Portsmouth, GCHQ in Cheltenham, and large, private sector suppliers like Qinetiq in Farnborough and Thales in Bristol, Southern England and Wales boast an impressive defence armoury.

To support growth in these areas, the Scale Up programme is delivering a package of support to help members find technology solutions, collaborate with university partners, large enterprises and defence and security sector customers, and access funding to accelerate their innovations. Defence and security applications may be relevant to air, land, maritime or space domains, and all current Scale-Up programme sectors offer adjacent market opportunities in defence and security including health, advanced engineering and telecoms. Through bid support provided in the programme, we are here to support you in successfully bidding for these funding calls and competitions with one of our six partner universities, which possess internationally recognised centres of research excellence with established track records of collaborative R&D with innovators in the defence and security sector. Find out more about the research expertise at our partner universities.

If you are looking to bid for grant funding calls in this area, we can support you with the following:

  • help to identify research expertise from our partner universities’ ecosystems to form a collaboration on the bid
  • expertise and experience to help you craft a compelling funding bid – we can review your bid, identify gaps and make suggestions for improvements, essentially acting as a ‘critical friend’.
  • fund a professional bid consultant’s time to strengthen the bid further.
