Q. What is the SETsquared Scale-Up Programme?

A. The SETsquared Scale-Up Programme is a programme run by SETsquared – a partnership between the University of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. The Scale-Up Programme is a collaboration of these five institutions plus Cardiff University.

Q) What does the SETsquared Scale-Up Programme do?

A) The key aim for the SETsquared Scale-Up Programme is to engage with businesses which are in the process of scaling, and help to secure collaborative R&D funding through submitting proposal for various funding calls using one or more researcher’s expertise from our partner Universities.

We can also provide support for match funding and other investment opportunities. Our Investment Programme team work with companies to help secure match funding on successful bids using our vast network of active investors.

The SETsquared Scale-Up Programme holds events for all members aiming to support members at various stages of growth in their companies. In the past, we have hosted six Grant Writing Briefing Breakfasts across the partnership, as well making our mark on the NHS Expo 2019. Q) What are the campaigns the Scale-Up Programme runs?

A) The Scale-Up Programme runs campaigns around upcoming funding calls aligned with the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). We focus our expertise on supporting consortia submit and secure funding; the consortia will include at least one company and at least one researcher from one of our six partner Universities.

Q) Is there a cost associated with membership to the SETsquared Scale-Up Programme?

A) The Scale-Up Programme offers two types of membership, associate and full.

Under the associate membership tier, the company will be able to enjoy the following:

  • Access to our Scale-Up member network
  • Invites to exclusive events
  • Peer to peer mentoring and support

Under the full membership tier, companies will be able to enjoy all of the above and the following:

  • Bespoke R&D support and mentoring to submission stage and beyond
  • Opportunity to access proposal development funding.
  • Access to the Investment Programme and support

Full membership to the SETsquared Scale-Up Programme has an associated cost; the fee is valid for one year of £1,600. If the company is eligible for full membership, the fee can be waivered using De Minimis.

Q) How do I know if I’m eligible for De Minimis?

A) If you have received less than €200,000 of state aid in the last three years you will be eligible to make a De Minimis claim. For more information on De Minimis, please refer to this article.

Q) How do I apply for full membership to the Scale-Up Programme?

A) Full membership is offered on an invite only basis. Our sector leads will meet with the company and after discussion will offer this tier of membership to companies who are in a position to, and actively seeking engagement with our partner Universities for collaborative R&D projects.

Q) How do I know if my company is eligible for the Programme?

A) The SETsquared Scale-Up Programme is perfect for companies who have an appetite for collaborative R&D, and who are a tech based company in one of the following sectors:
