SETsquared Programmes enable strong start for Bath spin-out Diversus

Bath SETsquared member, the newly formed Diversus Technology, has developed a 3D composite material which improves performance and reduces the manufacturing costs compared to traditional composite products. It has clear applications across a number of industries including automotive, aerospace and high performance sports.

The team has recently benefitted from taking part in SETsquared’s Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research Programme (ICURe). ICURe, which is funded by InnovateUK and HEFCE, offers university researchers with commercially-promising ideas up to £50k to ‘get out of the lab’ and validate their ideas in the marketplace.

Taking part in the programme enabled the Diversus team to meet with prospective customers, in order to clearly understand challenges in the materials marketplace and then tailor their solution to meet industry needs.

Commenting on the Programme, researcher Fulvio Pinto, said: “For me ICURe was like learning a new language. The programme gave me the tools to learn the “grammar” of business and research commercialisation.”

The team have since gone on to take part in SETsquared’s Open Innovation Showcase in May, where they attracted interest from a number of large corporate organisations interested in drawing in new technologies and innovation from start-up companies.

The company is deemed to be pre-seed stage by the VC community and Diversus are now eagerly awaiting a decision on potential bridge funding to seed stage from InnovateUK.
