Surrey team win £894k grant to develop iTravel

SETsquared Surrey member Visual Atoms alongside alumnus iGeolise plus the University of Surrey been awarded a grant of £894k by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, to develop iTravel.

iTravel is a smartphone-based interactive travel assistant, providing end-to-end routing and proactive contextual information to travellers, whether they are commuters or tourists. It aims to bridge the gap between textual/map-based navigation and visual navigation/real-time interaction.

iTravel will achieve this by combining seamless multimodal routing and real-time traffic updates with automatically generated visual routes and automatically selected and location-sensitive visual checkpoints displayed on the smartphone’s screen and real-time visual search through the smartphone’s camera.

This allows users to get a visual fix on their position and see an augmented view of their surroundings on the smartphone’s screen, including travel information, directions, local landmark information, and local advertisements and offers.

Dr. Stavros Paschalakis, Director of Visual Atoms and lead project manager of iTravel, says: “iTravel aims to provide a personalised, intelligent, proactive and interactive journey planning and mobility solution – which is unique in the marketplace. The funded project will run until January 2019 and we hope that it will be available to consumers in late 2019. The project brings together the complimentary expertise of the two companies plus the computer vision research strengths of the University of Surrey’s Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP).”
