University of Exeter spinout acquired by Synopsys

Simpleware, an Exeter SETsquared member and University of Exeter spinout, has been acquired by Synopsys Inc, the Silicon to Software partner for innovative companies developing the electronic products and software applications we rely on every day.

Simpleware was founded in 2000 by Philippe Young Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Exeter and Simpleware Senior R&D Director at Synopsys.

Professor Young began looking at ways to convert 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) scan data into accurate and sophisticated computer models for simulating impact. This technology became the basis for Simpleware.

Over time, the Simpleware products were extended to cover a broader range of applications in the life sciences, consumer products, mil-aero and oil and gas industries.

Philippe Young, Simpleware Senior R&D Director at Synopsys said: “The idea for Simpleware emerged to fulfil a need in the industry.

“We were looking at the response of the human body to impact from external forces using computer simulation tools in applications such as automotive crashes and helmet design. We found that although computer modelling was established in aerodynamics, for example, there wasn’t really anything for the purpose of modelling impact on the human body.”

Simpleware has grown significantly in the last 16 years receiving significant accolades including winning consecutive Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in 2012 and 2013, recognising efforts in innovation and growing overseas business. Other recent awards include the PraxisUnico Business Impact – Aspiring Award in 2012 and an Institute of Physics (IOP) Innovation Award in 2013.

The University of Exeter retained a small shareholding in the Company and has supported the Company throughout its development.

Sean Fielding, Director of Innovation, Impact and Business at the University said: “We are delighted that the excellence and drive of Simpleware over more than 10 years has been valued so highly through this deal.  It’s been exciting partnering Philippe through his journey and we hope that more academics will follow his path.”

Synopsys Inc is the world’s 15th largest software company, Synopsys has a long history of being a global leader in electronic design automation (EDA) and semiconductor IP and is also growing its leadership in software quality and security solutions.
