Expert masterclass: Winning work from public sector

Expert masterclass: Winning work from public sector

This masterclass supports anyone seeking to do business with the public sector.  It’s a practical session where we’ll explain how tendering works, how the public sector buys, and particular strategies for winning work.

We’ll look at the Contracts Finder portal where the government advertises opportunities, talk through registering on this and view current and live opportunities. We’ll discuss critical documents needed to progress in tendering and the increase in focus on environmental and social elements of tenders.  Tendering is not a dark art. It may be a pain in the neck, but if you want to work with the public sector it’s a skill to be learned.

The Winning work from public sector session will be provided in the following format:

  • Peer Learning
  • Short bursts of lecture content
  • Exercises and examples to build up learning
  • Acquiring knowledge through experimental learning

It will cover the following content:

  • We will discuss how the public sector buys; the systems, processes and practical tools.
  • We will talk through registering on Contracts Finder, a government procurement portal.
  • We will look at live opportunities and consider the opportunities and challenges for small, possibly start-up businesses to win work from the public sector.
  • We will look at how sustainability is now a core, explicitly evaluated element of tendering.
  • We’ll discuss strategies to build the reputation, experience and turnover needed to access tender opportunities.

Who should attend:

This workshop is for any organisation that wants to do business with public sector buyers.  It introduces the concept for delegates who have limited or no experience in contracting with the public sector.  If you know your way around a tender portal, it’s NOT for you (register on the Social Value session to hone your skills instead).

Takeaways from the session will include:

  1. Understanding the systems and processes public sector organisations use to purchase goods and services.
  2. Awareness of electronic portals used by the public sector to procure goods and services.
  3. Understanding the core elements of a tender document, including a focus on sustainability, and how this presents within tender documentation.
  4. Identification of documentation needed in order to do business with public sector organisations.
  5. Recognising an appropriate strategy to build business with the public sector.
