TRAINING

Turn research excellence into real-world impact.

About the Training Programme

Developed from the Impact-IP Programme, this series of short, online courses captures insights from leading commercialisation experts, curated by SETsquared, to support those engaging with commercialisation for the first time. The courses are designed to demystify the key steps of turning innovative research into viable products, services, and partnerships.

Exclusively available to academics and staff from SETsquared partnership universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey).

What’s on offer?

For academic entrepreneurs and Technology Transfer Officers (TTOs), the journey from lab to market can seem complex and difficult to picture. IMPACT-IP Training clarifies that journey.

Commercialisation Expert Modules

In this short, online course, you’ll learn about three key topics:

  1. Innovations Project Management, with enterprise expert and experienced Entrepreneur in Residence Chris Hobbs.
  2. Early Investor Pitching, with CEO and investor Laurence Ede, who has successfully built and exited a science start-up.
  3. Customer Discovery, with Technology Transfer Officer and spin-out coach Nicholas Pearson.

Each module contains just three core lessons, taking only 15-20 minutes to complete. You can learn entirely in your own time. It’s made up of a blend of short expert interview videos, practical guidance, graphical explainers, and brief knowledge checks to help you apply these concepts to your own work.

By the end of this course, you will have a basic understanding of the principles of innovation project management, early investor pitching and customer discovery techniques for academic entrepreneurs who are evaluating commercialisation opportunities and their supporting TTOs.

Commercialisation Through Partnerships

This course is for researchers who are interested in exploring pathways to commercialise their research at an early stage.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate various commercial engagement options and partnership models relevant to research commercialisation.
  • Analyse successful partnership strategies through case studies across diverse sectors, including medical devices, wellbeing software, and social ventures.
  • Develop a structured approach to mapping partner ecosystems and prioritising potential collaborators.
  • Construct compelling partnership propositions using the Partnership Canvas framework.
  • Assess and develop strategies for building and managing high-performing partnerships to maximise research impact.

There are seven lessons in this course. You can proceed through the course in sequence, or dip into different sections as you need to: it’s up to you.
