WORLD LEADING BUSINESS SUPPORT

EARLY CAREER RESEARCHER
TRAINING:

HYDROGEN

Fuel the future with hydrogen innovation

Next cohort dates: Be part of our 1st exclusive cohort in June

Blended, online learning, fully funded

Green hydrogen is set to revolutionise how we live, work, and power our world. But to unlock its full potential, we need new ideas, technologies, and fresh approaches.

That’s where you come in.

If you’re an early career researcher working in green hydrogen or sustainable energy, this training programme will give you the tools, knowledge, and connections to turn your research into real-world impact. You’ll explore commercialisation pathways, develop leadership skills, and learn how to bring your ideas to life through co-creation and spin-out ventures.

This training is delivered by SETsquared and funded by GW-SHIFT, a powerhouse partnership connecting academic, civic, and industry leaders across South Wales and the South West to accelerate the hydrogen transition.

Programme overview

Module 1: Innovation partnerships

Session 1 – commercial engagement options

Why partners are key to commercialisation, how businesses engage with academia, and the roles of partnerships in translational research.

Session 2 – hydrogen-based case study

Interview with an experienced founder, explorations of module themes through practice, visualisation of value proposition and key partners.

Module 2: Commercialisation ecosystems

Session 3 – knowledge exchange and horizon scanning.

Session 4 – partner networks and ecosystems.

Defining types of partners, exploring networks through ecosystem mapping, identifying gaps and prioritising partners.

Session 5 – equality, diversity and inclusion training, responsible and ethical research and design.

Session 6 – the importance of IP.

All through self-paced online learning, so you can access the training at a time that suits you. By taking part in the programme, you’ll also be given exclusive access to the SETsquared Innovation Platform, a tailored online space for those innovating in hydrogen to explore collaborations.

In addition, you will have access to a hydrogen specialist to support with further signposting within the sector and R&D collaborations.

On completion, you will receive a certificate of participation to evidence the development of your business proposition.

Who should take part?

Early career researchers* from the universities that make up the GW-SHIFT partnership: Exeter, Plymouth, Swansea, South Wales, Bristol and Bath.

Applications from outside of these universities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*The definition of Early Career Researcher will be interpreted broadly and generally means you’re in your first or second post (eg PostDoc or Lecturer), the spirit is that you’re early in your research career. There is no set duration for this post-PhD period, as we understand that you may have spent time in industry or government and then returned to academia.
